A Message In Blood

Happy Halloween!!  I can't believe it's here already!  As usual, I had more ideas than I could bring about in time, but this one....this one wasn't going to wait.  I'll be filing my nails back to ovals again very soon, and getting rid of the teabag patch (HOORAY!), so this was urgent...if nail art is ever urgent.

I owe this idea (and so much else) to the awesome people at the MUA Nail Board.  When I first showed off my Halloween claws, lennyray and laikabear both said they looked like pen nibs.  Once I patched the broken tip of my index, it looked even more like a nib.

OPI Bling Dynasty, topped w Sinful Colors Matte Top Coat

I need to thank Laquerlove too.  She does outstanding nail art using Sakura Gelly Roll pens and I picked some up because of her.  They were ideal for this.  Big thanks to all three of you and to NB in general!  And once again...

If you missed it, I edited in Monday's post last night and Wicked Winnings Wednesday #5 is up.  Have a great Halloween, everyone!

Wicked Winnings Wednesday - Sephora by OPI If You've Got It, Haunt It

Congrats to Kelsey, who won Wicked Wednesday #4! Thank you so much to everyone who entered! -nichole

If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet...GET YOUR FLU SHOT!!  I kept putting it off and now I have the flu.  Bleh.  Not the worst flu I've ever had, but still wearing me out.  I haven't painted my nails since Thursday.  It's the weirdest coincidence, but painting myself green and getting the flu seem to go together.  It happened in '10 and now it's happened again.  If Zeus hadn't caught it too, I'd almost swear it was the paint.  Strange.  Anyway...I'm rambling.  Nichole hasn't asked Rafflecopter for a winner yet (as of the time I'm writing this), so I don't have one to announce.

I have to end this month of giveaways with something special.  This final prize is a bottle of one of my favorite glitters, Sephora by OPI If You've Got It, Haunt It.  It's perfect for Halloween, but great any time of the year.  This post is turning into a patchwork disaster, but...oh well.  There was just no way I was gonna skip wearing it on my claws!

two coats, over black

So endlessly glad I reswatched it!  I know a lot of people prefer dark polishes on short nails, but I love this even more on long nails than on nubs.  So much going on in this polish, all the twinkling blue and green, orange and yellow, and the tiny silver.

Can you see why I saved it for last?

Aside from the brand being recently kaput, it's also simply....outstanding!

I first wore it back in May and fell in love right away.

Wow my nails were short!  That's about as short as they can be.  I don't miss that at all!  I meant to give the prize bottle away over the summer, but life had other plans.  It was what gave me the idea for Wicked Winnings Wednesday, so it's fitting that it's the final prize.

So here we go, the fifth and final chance for Wicked Winnings!  Good luck and thanks for entering!  This has been so much fun!

P.S. - I've got something special planned for closer to xmas.  Shh...it's a secret.

Revlon Evening Opulence

I'm a bit late on these, but it took me a while to find a display at CVS.  Nichole posted her swatch and comparison for Rich weeks ago.  I saw them at Target a little while after that, but I'm all about the CVS coupons and knew I could get a better deal there.  I originally bought just three of the four new polishes, but I wound up going back for Seductive too.  I also got one of the lip glosses, called Embellished.  I was going to swatch that too and include it in this post, but I have a vitamin D crack on one side of my mouth, so lip swatches will have to wait.  This is just a hunch, but I don't think these new shades are LE.  I could be wrong, but I have a few reasons.  For starters, the shade name stickers have numbers on them.  Revlon doesn't number their LE's.  The display doesn't say "limited edition" anywhere either, and Revlon's generally pretty good about that.  They also tend to make new Gucci Westman shades core...though not always.  We'll see soon enough.  Target's usually quick to reset their core displays, so I'll be eyeing the Revlon core closely to see.

Elusive has a black crelly base with a blend of medium teal hexagonal glitter, tiny green glitter, blue microglitter, and a little bit of purple shimmer too.

Know what's weird?  Elusive dries matte.  Too weird!  Nothing a little top coat can't fix, right?  Well...that leads me to a bigger issue.  This is two coats and a TON of top coat.  Elusive is a thirsty, thirsty polish.  The cleanup was tough, but the removal was the real challenge.  There's more glitter here than you see, because the base covers some of it.  Between that, the 5-ish layers of top coat, and the patched index nail...this was not fun to take off.  I wound up having to take the glitter off of the patch with a 4-way buffer!  I soaked the rest in my scrub tub and gave them plenty of good scrubbing before Elusive finally let go.  Still....ooooh....

I kinda wonder if Elusive is named for its purple shimmer.  You can't see it at all sometimes, but then in the bright sun (like the photo above), there it is.  There's a lot to love here, if you can overlook the hassles involved.

I wore it for a few days and wasn't bored at all.  Zeus got a bottle too, even though I warned him about the issues he might have with it.  He said it was so pretty that he didn't care and wanted it anyway.  Can't really fault him, can you?

Yummy!  Well...once you quench its undying thirst for top coat.  I first tried it with a coat of Gelous followed with Seche Vite.  Looked great until it dried fully.  Then this happened...

Say it with me, people..."ewwww".  Un-hot.  Lumpy.  The sunlight really shows off the ick factor, but I guess it wasn't that bad in lower light like the photo below.  I wound up adding two more coats of Gelous and another of Seche Vite.  Thirsty!

Rich is a complex green-toned pale gold foil.

I'm cheating a little by calling it pale gold.  It's kinda too many colors to describe.  This is three coats and like all foils, the cleanup will be tough if you get it on your skin.  Nichole compared it to Urban Decay Addiction and OPI Number One Nemesis, but found that it's not an exact dupe for either.  I'll be comparing it to NYC Flashback soon.  For now, it's on its own...and it's lovely.  There's a 'darker around the edges' quality to it.  I love polishes like that!

In lower light that effect goes away and a different kind of depth comes out.  It looks almost silver at times.  So pretty!

This is the only one in the collection that I mattified, and wow does it look good this way!

Seductive is a deep violet crelly.

So glad I went back for this one!  It's vampy and deep and so flattering for a pale thing like me.  I can see it looking black if you're darker though.  Because it's a crelly, it'll take at least three coats for opacity on any nail length.  This is three, but I only put two coats on my right hand and it really wasn't enough.  I wound up getting 'stuck' in it for a whole week, because of the flu, so I can report that it wore pretty well on me.  No chipping, but I did have some pretty bad tipwear on my right hand.  Maybe it was because I only used two coats.  Dunno.  I have a hunch that it *might* be sheer enough for sandwiches, but I didn't try it out.

Divine is a blackened red shimmer.

The formula on this one is suuuper thick and almost a one-coater, but I wound up using two.  Something about the Revlon Nail Enamel formula doesn't like me.  They tend to bubble.  I got at least a tiny bit of bubbling with all four of today's polishes, but Divine is the only one where they're an issue.  They kinda ruin it for me.  They're not glaringly obvious, but they're noticeable.  It's a shame, because Divine is gorgeous.  I'm gonna give it another try sometime, sponged on, but I'm not sure if it's a keeper for me.

It's glowy and sexy...but...bubbles... *sigh*

Of course, it's not unique.  In fact, it's a near-dupe for something more expensive.

See how my ring finger is a slightly cooler red and bubble-free?  That's OPI Royal Rajah Ruby.  I finally got around to buying it.  It's up around $20 now, since it's become kinda HTF, but I had a lot of eBay Bucks.  If you're lemming RRR and Revlon Nail Enamels don't bubble on you, Divine might be perfect for you.

Bottom line: All gorgeous!  This line bubbles on me as a rule, but it isn't noticeable in any of these shades except Divine.  I wouldn't say any are must-haves, but Elusive is fairly unique and worth getting if you're willing to put up with its quirks.  The rest are somewhat dupey, but if the formula works for you they're good alternatives for more expensive polishes.

I know I'm not alone in the Revlon bubbling problem.  Does it happen to you too?  I wish I could figure out why it happens.  It can be a bit heartbreaking to find a gorgeous shade and then have it froth up as it dries.  Luckily I don't usually have this problem with their other lines.

Everybody Wants to be a Cat

It's my final offering for Halloween, so I figured I'd make it a costume tutorial. One of the easy ones is Cat Makeup. It's quick, easy, and you probably have 90% of it at home already. (what, you don't have cat ears in your house? Pfft, I have at least four sets.)

Step One: Start with a Clean Face, and Apply Foundation as Normal

Now, since I'm using my lovely firstborn...there is no makeup here. For kids, you want to keep this fairly minimal since you will be washing their face later. If I were doing it on myself, I'd apply my primer, foundation, concealer, contour, etc during this step.

Once your face is done, apply your eye makeup however you want. I went with a wash of black eyeshadow and a super-dramatic cat eye. I also drew some little faux lashes on the underside. For adults (and the non-squirmy) I think a more dramatic eye would be better...and definitely mascara.

Step Two: Draw the Guide for the Nose

Using my (aging) felt tipped liquid liner, I drew a small ^ shape on the end of her nose, just to give me a starting point. It's good at this point to take a step back, and make sure it's straight.

Then fill in the end of the nose, including the nostril area, with your eyeliner. Keep in mind that you want a bit of an upside down triangle/heart shape. Set the liner with black powder shadow to make it look as opaque as possible.

gotta get into character.

Step Three: Add Some White for the Muzzle (Optional)

You can use a white shadow base (like Nyx Milk, or their white shadow primer), but I used Manic Panic Gothic White Foundation, applied with my knock-off beauty blender.

Once you have the white where you want, draw a line right down the center of the philtrum.

Step Four: Whiskers!

I added whiskers with a regular black kohl pencil. When you do the dots, press the pencil down and twist it, so the color will deposit over the creamy foundation. For a longer-wearing look, waterproof gel liner would be really great for this step.

Step Five: Lips

I applied black lipstick to just the upper lip. It will smear over time, but dammit if it doesn't look cute at first. If you aren't squirmy, it might be a nice touch to draw curved lines starting at the corners of the lips to give more of the appearance of a rounded muzzle.

Step Six: Add Ears and Get Dressed!

We've actually had these ears forever and ever. I clipped them in under the crown layer of hair, just to give them a more natural appearance.

And that's pretty much it. Throw on some black clothes and call it a day. This would be a really school friendly costume, since most of it depends on your face. I think this would also be super comfortable too...which is why this is what I will be doing to my own head on Halloween!

all finished.

her reaction to seeing herself. She definitely enjoyed it.

A Spot In The Dark

Who wants to play 'let's pretend this post was up on Monday and not Wednesday'?

When I do a post about a layering combo, I'm never sure what order to use for the photos.  In this case I'm so nuts over the end result that it goes first!

KleanColor Beyond Time & Space over Color Club Wild Cactus

I might have to do a full mani of this sometime, I love it that much.  ...but wait...there's more!  It's got a secret!

Somehow I found myself with a couple of bottles of NYC Demon Glow, a UV reactive top coat, before I had a blacklight bulb.  They were twin packed at Dollar Tree with a white shimmer called Lazy Sundae that I love for stamping.  I loved what starlet10799 on the MUA Nail Board did with it last year, but I don't have any Halloween stamping plates.  I'd been trying to figure out what to do with Demon Glow when I suddenly remembered the black glitter waiting in my swatching bin.  It worked even better than I'd hoped it would!

So from the beginning then...

Color Club Sunrise Canyon is a chartreuse cream.

I am in complete awe of this garish, absurd color!  Wow!  It's like CoverGirl Appletini tilted a bit more toward yellow for even more impact.  I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it a year ago and I was kinda unsure about it right up until I put it on.  I got it in one of those packs from Ross, the whole Fiesta collection.  The set was worth it for the two I knew I wanted, Wild Cactus and Endless Summer, so this was a great bonus.  I think Nichole will be getting Flamingo (if she wants it), but I'm not sure what I'll do with On The Rocks and Mamba yet.  As for the formula on Sunrise Canyon, it's on the watery side, but workable.  This is three coats.  I had only a few small bubbles, but they were "deep", going all the way through the color like a tunnel.  You'd never really notice though, with such a bold color.  If I was a normal person, I'd probably live in this color for a while, I love it that much.  As is, who knows when I'll wear it again...but I really want to!

NYC Demon Glow is a clear UV-reactive top coat.

I was worried that Demon Glow would alter the base color, but it really didn't.  Yay!  This is two coats of Demon Glow over Sunrise Canyon, because one coat went on a little patchy.  This was easily the weirdest cleanup I've ever done.  To make sure I got as much of it off of my skin as I could, I had to clean up under blacklight while standing in my bathroom.  I chased little glowing streaks and spots around for ages and I think I got most of it.  The glow blows me away!

KleanColor Beyond Time & Space has three sizes of matte black glitter in a base that dries matte.

I had the same issue with this that I did with On-Off Relationship.  The glitter's a bit sparse, so you have to dab or it'll be uneven and patchy.  The trouble is that it gets lumpy, so in order to have it look decent matte, you still need a matte top coat.  Makes the whole matte aspect of these glitters a bit pointless, but...oh well.  I have a matte top coat, of course, and I used it...

Then I had to double check to see if the matte coat affected the UV glow...

A bit, but it does still glow.  It's at its brightest when it's the top layer, but the glow is still there even under a whole bunch of coats of other stuff.  Yay!

So yeah... It is actually Wednesday.  I've had the flu all week, so I'm catching up and I'll be sneaking this week's posts in where they should have been.  See you at weird, random times and Happy (very nearly) Halloween!

Halloween Pinspiration

I couldn't let Halloween pass without scouring Pinterest for inspiration. I stumbled on to this picture and fell in love...but it linked back to a random tumblr. Boo. So after a quick GIS, I found (what I hope) is the original, by an artist on Deviantart. There is some pretty great stuff, you should check it out! My version isn't an exact copy, but dammit if I didn't love the outcome anyway.

How To Paint Yourself Green

I've wanted to paint myself green again for so long now!  I did it once before, last minute, for a bar crawl in the last few months of my single life, back in '10.  I had a great time, got a TON of compliments, had most of my drinks bought for me, got hhhhammered, turned a dance partner slightly green, swigged rum over a toilet with a stranger in a Girl Scout costume, and just had an all-around awesome time...but it didn't photograph well and I've always thought I could do better.  I'm way happier with how it turned out this time around.

It's pretty easy too, and really cheap!  Yay!  Cheap!  I think I spent a total of less than $7, since I mostly used stuff I already had.  This tutorial's inspired partly by a smeared smurf who came CHARGING toward me at the first bar that night and yelled "HOW did you get yourself so GREEN???"  Random smeary smurf man, this is for you, wherever you are!

Of course, it doesn't have to be green...or a witch.  You can turn yourself pretty much any color you can mix with cream makeup and similarly-colored eyeshadow.  Someday I want to try being silver.  Been a goal of mine for years.  I'm not normal, I know.

Prep:

  • Remove hair from any areas you'll be turning green
  • Paint your nails
  • Plan your outfit

The makeup will show every little hair it covers, so get them gone!  I used a microtrimmer.  Be sure to do the backs of your hands and any other place you'll be covering.

Bare nails will show your natural skin color and that won't work!  Even if you don't normally paint...haha...nevermind...but really, paint your nails.  You know you don't need an excuse!  I'm wearing Revlon Seductive in these photos.  Review coming soon!

Keep in mind that you'll have to cover all bare skin with color.  Long sleeves are a good idea here.  Stockings are practically mandatory, unless you'll be wearing a floor-length dress and boots or something.  Gloves are also an option to keep in mind.  Really consider what skin will show and how much of yourself you're willing to paint.

You'll need:

  • green cream makeup
  • black eyeliner
  • black mascara
  • face and body lotions (shimmer lotions are a plus)
  • green eyeshadow
  • body shimmer powder
  • additional makeup of your choice
  • brushes, sponges, etc for application
  • a way to keep your hair out of the way while you apply
  • hairspray, firm or extra firm hold

You can get the cream makeup at a costume shop or at some drugstores.  Green's annoyingly tough to find this year, for me at least.  I got this at Spirit Of Halloween, but I found it at Target later too for $1 and I kicked myself.  Each green will be a bit different, and you can always mix your own from blue and yellow if you can't find green, and add white if the one you find is too dark for your liking.

The green eyeshadow is essential, since the cream makeup won't stay on your lids and shouldn't go too close to your mouth.  Loose shadow works best, but I used a pressed one.  I couldn't find loose.  Bleh.

I used a basic face lotion for the facial part and a shimmer body lotion for the body part, brand and type don't seem to matter much.  For the powder step, I used an ancient shimmer wand thing from The Body Shop.  The powder and lotion don't have to shimmer, but the shimmer will help hide any patchiness of the color.  It works like those 'age minimizing' highlighters.

Eyeliner and mascara are a must.  The rest of your look once you're green is completely up to you and what you have at hand.

Hairspray is a must for me.  Big, crazy hair adds to the witchiness.

Application-

Set up somewhere that's easy to clean.  This may make a horrible mess.  Once your prep is done, your hair is off your face, and your supplies and tools are all out, the fun can begin.  The first step is eyeliner.  Tightline and waterline now.  It's just easier to do when your fingers aren't green.  Waterlining is important!  You want to hide that little strip of your skin color!

normal(-ish) Amanda

...I look like crap, but oh well.  This is the good photo.  Middle of the night on a night off when my skin is all hormonal and I haven't slept much all week was kinda the only time I could do this.  Meh.

You should be smarter than I was and patch-test the cream makeup somewhere.  Rub a dot of it in somewhere hidden and give your skin time to freak out if it wants to, then make sure you can wash it off.  I didn't do this and spent a lot of time fretting about whether it'd come off in the shower.  (It did, mostly. We'll get to that.)

A weird note here.  You'll put your costume on when you're done, so you don't get makeup all over it.  While you're applying, wear something easy to take off.  Wear nothing if possible.  When I did this for the bar crawl, I lived alone, so I went with that option.  Just easier.  For this, I wore a tee.  I wound up worrying that the gray one would stain, so I switched to black. I should have started in black.  A tee isn't the best option, really.  Too tough to pull off without getting makeup everywhere.  Seriously, be topless (or bra-only) if you can.

Put a blob each of the cream makeup and your lotion on the back of your hand and blend together.

The mix doesn't need to be exact.  I wound up using a lot more green than shown here.  Not quite 40/60 seemed to be about right for me, but it's your call.  You're trying to thin it a bit and make it less disgusting to put on, that's all.  Coat your face with a priming coat of this mix.  I started with a sponge for this coat.

For now the main focus is basic coverage.  The packaging said to avoid the mouth area, so I kept it away as much as I could.  That and the eye area will be handled in a bit.  Don't bother trying to cover your eye area, since it won't stick anyway.  I did my ears too, because my hair is up in these photos.  If you're sure your ears won't be seen, don't bother with them.

Once you've got the face's first coat down, do the rest of your visible skin.  How you apply is up to you.  I used sponges, brushes, and my fingers for various parts of the application.  This first coat is just the start.  It will look crappy.

Blotchy, isn't it?  Applying a second coat evens out a lot.  For that coat, focus on areas you missed the first time.  I did the second coat with my fingers.  The second coat doesn't need to be perfect either, but get all of the weird spots.  Behind your ears (if you're doing them), the folds around your nose, every bit of both hands, all of it needs to be green!  ...just not the eye and mouth areas.  They're next.

This step is where it starts to come together.  Green eyeshadow (I used a Milani from Dollar Tree) will cover the spots that the cream couldn't.  Apply it to your eye area and around your mouth (I put a little over my lips too, because photo), then blend out to the rest of the face.  Apply your shimmer powder to blend everything together, making sure to cover and blend everything that's green.  The shimmer really makes all of the difference...

shirt shows why you wanna put the costume on after

From here, it's all up to you.  At minimum, smoky eyeliner and a "weird" color lipgloss should be applied...even if you're a dude.  Your lips and eyes are the toughest to cover, but they're also the things people will look at most.  If you wanted to go dramatic, flashy, etc...go for it!  You can contour, do drag queen eyes, whatever...just keep in mind that colors will skew weirdly now that you're green.  I wound up doing a smoky shadow and smudgy liner, plus a purple gloss.

Costume's next.  Hair's last.  I didn't tease it, I tormented it!  Once that's done, be sure to cackle a lot...and have fun!

Removal will vary with the brand of cream makeup used, but a shower is required...and very strongly desired by the time the night's over.  I took these photos last night and scrubbed vigorously in the shower, but I'm still very faintly green in a few little areas.  The spaces between my fingers are very slightly tinted, but it's really not noticeable.  The cream makeup stands a good chance of breaking you out, but awesomeness has its price.

I terrified poor Zeus unintentionally...but I really want to do this again to intentionally terrify the trick-or-treaters next week!  AHAHAHAHA!!

So...do you have your costume/makeup planned yet?  What will you be?

Nail Envy, Faux Stilettos, and Glitter

I'm experiencing some serious nail envy these days. Amanda's stiletto nails are kinda superawesome. But I am way too chicken to change the shape of my nails. They like being squared. I'm afraid to anger them, lest they snap right off and abandon me. I decided to try and fake it a little, and I admit...I'm kinda in love with the look! All it took was some tape (and a fair amount of cursing) to fake it for the Halloweeny season. I feel very witchy!
